Great Northern Railway Historical Society

The Historic Northland Lodge was crafted in 1929 by the railroad baron Louis Hill of the Great Northern Railway, builder of the Landmark Prince of Whales Hotel as well as many of the chalets and lodges in Glacier National Park. He built this charming home as a personal residence-nestled serenely against Bertha Mountain, away from the social and commercial bustle of Waterton Village, yet still within view of the hamlet of his holdings.

For more than half of a century now our intention has been to provide our friends and guests the kind of hospitality and restful retreat a railroad baron would have appreciated.

The Northland Lodge offers a spacious balcony with a reach-out-and-touch view of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Here you can relax in plush lounge chairs, read, visit, nap, or just enjoy nature's panoramic majesty in concert with our own brand of "surround sound," Waterton-style. Inside, furnished with a library of books, magazines and movies, our lobby's comfy couches and large field-stone fireplace beckon and invite you to curl up contented on chilly Alberta evenings.

Numerous activities and worthy attractions revolve around Waterton's breathtaking scenery; hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, trail riding, fishing, scenic boat tours, caneoing, golf, a movie theatre, and various shops and restaurants await, all within a few minutes stroll of the Historic Northland Lodge.
